Activity: Dictionary Entries

  • Prompt students to think about a school-appropriate word or phrase they have heard a loved one use a lot. It should be a word that the person finds meaningful. Alternatively, they can consider a tradition that is important to them. For example, a student may choose the word “joy” because their mom frequently talks about finding joy in life.
  • They will write a dictionary-style entry for this word, phrase, or tradition. This should include:
    • The word, phrase, or tradition
    • How they personally define the word
    • An example of how this word, phrase, or tradition exists in their life
  • Have students share their dictionary definitions with the class.
  • Optional: Create a class dictionary using words, phrases, routines, and memories to honor your class.
  • Follow-up questions:
    • How did it feel to honor the person or people that your dictionary entry was about?
    • Would you want to share your dictionary entry with your loved one, if you had the opportunity to? Why or why not?
