CC! and the Six Pillars for Special Education

The national offices of CHARACTER COUNTS! got some special guests this month during our annual Board of Governors meeting. A group of young students from Los Angeles County’s Division of Special Education school performed a short presentation on the Six Pillars of Character. We’ve posted videos so you can see for yourself:

They were applauded by a grateful audience of adults, and treated to pizza afterward, but really, it was just another day of talking about character for these students. That’s because at their school, the Horizon Principal’s Administrative Unit, the Six Pillars of Character form the core of daily classes in life skills and physical education. life skills classes are an important part of the curriculum for all of the school’s students, who range in age from 5 – 22, and include pupils with emotional and other disabilities, juvenile offenders, and students at risk of dropping out.

Horizon PAU has seen some impressive early results since faculty and staff began to implement CHARACTER COUNTS! in 2010. The school has seen:

  • 22% decrease in the number of behavioral referrals
  • 31% decrease in the number of student suspensions
  • 45% decrease in the number of students in severe crisis
    (defined as incidents requiring the Psychiatric Emergency Team to be called)

  1. Horizon is not engaging in accurate reporting of incidents, this is why they are citing a lack of incidents, suspensions and number of students in crisis. The Police have been to the campus often.
