"Taking a Stand": Scene 8

8. NEW FRIENDS

Stacy and Eve sit back to back, Bob sitting between them facing the audience..

BOB
If we knew what each other was thinking
it would make it a lot easier to communicate.

EVE
Stacy probably hates me. She would
never guess I was the one who told on her.
I should tell her it was me, but what would she
say back?

STACY
I don’t care who told about the money.
I’m just glad it’s over.
I think Alex, Wally, Jessie and Danny are
good people. Everybody looked down on
them because of Cory.

EVE
I made the wrong decision
to walk away from Stacy. She would
have been a good friend.

STACY
I think Eve would have been a good friend.
It’s too bad she decided to walk away.

BOB
There’s no way for people to know what
each other is thinking unless they can
talk to each other and be honest, but it is
worth the risk? What will the other person say back?

Eve and Stacy turn and see each other.

EVE & STACY
Hi.

EVE
I’m sorry Stacy. I’m the one who told the Dean
about you and Cory taking the money and the phone.

STACY
Oh, that’s OK.

EVE
I’m really sorry that--It’s OK?

STACY
Yes. Everything has worked out fine.

EVE
Do you want to have lunch together?

STACY
I don’t think your new group would
approve of that.

EVE
Forget them. I made a big mistake
ever joining them. That’s history.

STACY
Sure. We can have lunch together.
That would be great.
Alex, Danny and Jessie enter. They cross to Eve and Stacy.

ALEX
Can we sit here?

STACY
Yes. Of course.

They all sit together.

ALEX
I got my phone back.

STACY
Great.

DANNY
I heard they’re moving Cory to another school.

JESSIE
Good. I’m glad he’s gone.

STACY
He really needed a good friend.
He was trying to be one to me, but
he didn’t know how.

Wally walks past them and sits by himself.

JESSIE
What’s with him?

DANNY
I think he’s embarrassed that he wouldn’t
stand up for Alex like the rest of us did.

Pop Girls Enter looking at Stacy and Eve.

CANDY
Oh my God. Eve is eating with the Losers.

GERTRUDE
She picked them over us?

SANDY
That shows how stupid she is.

Gertrude, Candy, and Sandy all stare at Mandy in silence.

GERTRUDE
Aren’t you going to say something about her?

Another silence.

BOB
(to Mandy)
What are you waiting for?

MANDY
(to audience)
I don’t want to say something mean
about Eve. She was nice to me. I know
they don’t care about her, but I do.

BOB
It’s nice to care about someone,
but caring doesn’t mean anything unless
you’re willing to tell someone else.

CANDY
What’s with you? Are you in some kind of trance?

MANDY
I’m not going to make fun of them.
They never did anything to me.

CANDY
What is wrong with you?
They’re losers!

MANDY
How would you know?

Mandy crosses to the group.

MANDY
Can I sit here?

GROUP
Sure.

The Dudes enter and stop, starring at the group.

SPIKE
Whoa! They’re not in the same group,
but, they’re sitting together. I’m confused, Dude.

BUB
Yeah Dude, that’s a major whoa!

NACHO
It’s two groups coming together,
like nachos and extra cheese.

MOE
I think I’ll join them.

SPIKE
Dude, don’t tell me you’re serious.

MOE
See you dudes later.

BUB
Hey. I’m coming with you. Later dudes.

MOE
Would you mind if we sit with you?

STACY
That would be great. Have a seat.

GERTRUDE
Hey, wait a minute. There’s only three of us,
and look at all of them.

SANDY
Does that mean the Losers are more popular than us?

CANDY
They’re not Losers anymore. Now, they’re
the most popular kids in school. That sucks.

GERTRUDE
We need someone else in our group.
How about him?

They all look at Wally. He looks back.

CANDY
Hum. Gertrude, Candy, Sandy and Wally.
I like it.

WALLY
I’ve done it! I’ve reached the top. I’m
going to be one of the...Popular Girls?

BOB
If you don’t take a stand for something, you’ll
fall for anything. Show good character and
you’ll make this place a better community.
Imagine you are a ghost at your own
funeral. What would you want people to say about you?

WALLY
She was so lazy, she had to cheat on tests
and copy everybody’s homework.

GERTRUDE
He was always making fun of people.

SANDY
He kept pushing people around.

CANDY
She was always throwing trash everywhere.
A real slob.

BOB
I don’t believe anybody would want people talking
about them like that. I think you’d rather hear...

STACY
Everyone respected her because she treated
people with dignity.

EVE
He cared about other people. That’s
why we liked him so much.

DANNY
He was honest. Everybody trusted him.

MANDY
She was a good part of this community.

BOB
Sounds a lot better. We are all part of this
community. Try to remember these six standards
of behavior to earn respect.

MANDY
Respect people as fellow human beings.

NACHO
Be fair to other people.

SKEETER
Care about other people.

JESSIE
Be honest so that other people can trust you.

ALEX
Be responsible.

STACY
Be a positive part of your community.

BOB
If we can all show good character,
we can make this school
a good place to come to, and a
community that people respect.
Thank you for coming to our show.

THE END.
