Texas School District Honors Past Graduates as Pillars of Character

The Northside Independent School District (NISD) in San Antonio, TX will honor six of its past graduates as “Pillars of Character” at its annual gala at the Westin La Cantera Resort on September 5, reports MySanAntonio.com. The event and silent auction is expected to raise more than $150,000 for the Needham Education Foundation’s Classroom Innovation Grants-to-Teachers Program.

This year’s honorees include a news anchor, prosecutor, entrepreneur, cancer researcher, bank founder and  teen-parent advocate. The honorees are chosen each year from a pool of nearly 100,000 alumni of the school district.

The Pillars, of course, represent CHARACTER COUNTS! Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship), which are taught in several of the schools in the NISD.

Deborah Healy, Director of Guidance and Counseling for NISD, told MySanAntonio.com that the Six Pillars program “has become the foundation of NISD’s character education experience… it is a powerful experience when students actually meet the people (many of whom  may have attended the same schools and sat at the same desks) whose traits of  responsibility, fairness, caring, trustworthiness, respect, and citizenship make them successful people.”
