SPOKANE CELEBRATES GOOD CHARACTER!

Community Leaders on a Character-Building Crusade!

Spokane, Wash. — Spokane native child actress Ashley Dunn, Mayor John Doe and hundreds of community members joined together today to kick off a campaign to improve the character of Spokane’s young people.

“I think showing others you're an honest, decent, compassionate human being,” Miss Dunn said, “is the most important thing you can show people. I am proud that the character I play on television is a role model, and I am honored to be here today.”

Nearly 30 different events have been underway over the past three months, including a community service project where the local Rotary Club has teamed up with the Boys and Girls Clubs and other youth organizations for a major cleanup in Riverside Park on Sunday.

“Citizenship is one of the Six Pillars of Character,” Mayor Doe said. “Throughout National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week, we will see examples of all these Pillars in action. Spokane is a place of good character. As adults, we owe it to the next generation to teach these Pillars and make character count in our community.”

Events taking place in Spokane are part of a nationwide movement sponsored by the CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition, a nonpartisan and nonsectarian alliance of some 200 schools and youth-service organizations across the country. Members of the Coalition, which together have the potential of reaching over 40 million young people and their families, are working to put character development at the head of the American agenda.

As Mayor Doe noted, “National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week is a good opportunity to remind ourselves to live with integrity and do our share in the community, but we've got to keep this in mind all year long.”
