Dear [reporter’s name]:

Hundreds of young people in Spokane will celebrate this year’s "National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week," set for the third week in October, with ceremonies, activities, and programs promoting good character. Events will range from community service projects to in-school programs, a "Character Fair," poster and essay contests, and an overall commitment to bringing this important week to life in Spokane.

Last year’s celebration was successful in bringing diverse members of the community together to build a better future: community organizations joined with youth groups, parents joined with teachers, and the business community promoted contests, awards, and posters advocating the "Six Pillars of Character": trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Through our participation in National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week, we will join hundreds of other members of the national CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition (based in Los Angeles, CA) who together have the potential of reaching millions of young people across the country.

Any and all of the Six Pillars of Character provide interesting hooks for stories focusing on the values of Spokane’s youth. I will be calling you next week to discuss this further with you. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

[your name]
