1. OPENING SCENE
BOB steps out to the audience from an empty stage.
BOB
This play was modeled after the CHARACTER COUNTS!
program's Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness,
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
If you show these six standards of character,
you will earn respect from other people. Everybody
wants respect, but a lot of people are not willing to
earn it. There are a lot of excuses you can use
to be rude, dishonest, and mean to others.
Actors enter, give their line, and stop as the next enters.
GERTRUDE
Other kids were doing it too. That makes it OK.
NACHO
Nobody saw me do it. Nobody can prove it was me.
DANNY
I wasn’t hurting anybody. I was just teasing.
CANDY
What’s so bad about throwing my trash and
garbage on the ground? Who cares?
BOB
This school is a community, and you are a part of it.
Working together, we can make this place a good
community, by being people who have earned
respect. Take a look at the school I work for.
I’m the custodian. I keep things clean. I hear and
see a lot of things that people don’t know about.
Sometimes, I can tell exactly what people are thinking.
The actors exit. STACY ENTERS down left.
BOB
School is just opening for the day, and here comes the kids.
(pointing to Stacy)
There’s a interesting kid. She’s new, only been here a
couple of days. Sometimes, one person can change
a whole community. You’ll see what I mean.
