Anderson, IN: Roundup of Activity in 2004 - 2005 School Year

Here is a roundup of activity in Anderson at the end of the 2004-05 school year:

CC! Janet Sparks Memorial Scholarship and AYCA Awards

The second annual presentation of the Janet Sparks Memorial Scholarships and the American Youth Character Awards took place May 3, 2005, at the Anderson Chamber of Commerce Awards held at Reardon Auditorium, on the campus of Anderson University. CC! board member Joy Lloyd played a big role in this event.

CC! Athletes of Character Convocations
Local CC! president Dan Sager scheduled over 12 convocations with Anderson's CC! Athletes Class of 2005. Mr. Sager also facilitated these events, and CC! national faculty member Don Peslis says, "To see the faces of the students upon hearing about character both on and off the court has truly been TRRFCC!" The athletes described the importance of building good character and the Six Pillars, and signed and handed out their own personalized playing cards with the Six Pillars. A CC! Athletes of Character grad, Ashley Davis, who now plays #1 singles for Wake Forest, was guest speaker at this year's athletes banquet.

CC! Scholars of Character
"Ginger and our CC! Scholars TEAM wrapped up another TRRFCC! year of service in our schools and community," says Mr. Peslis. They gathered several thousand pounds of canned food for the WE CAN CARE Food drive this year, and both CC! and the CC! Scholars received special mention and thanks at the food drive's closing ceremonies. The team also led a blue-ribbon ceremony at the April CC! Scholars luncheon, where everyone heard the message that who they were really made a difference.

CC! and APD/SRO Block Party
During the 2004-05 academic year CC! partnered with the Anderson Police Department's Student Resource Officers (SRO) in the Anderson schools. As a part of the CC! "No-Bullying" pilot initiative, CC! board member Chad Boynton and the SRO team took CC! into all Anderson elementary schools along with the pilot "No-Bullying" curriculum. The SRO officers celebrated with 800 fifth graders on May 12, 2005.

Finally: Mr. Peslis, long an animating spirit in CC! at Anderson, graduated this May from the University of San Diego with an M.Ed. and a specialization in character education. Congratulations, Don!
