Morgan County, IN: Student-Athletes Record PSA's on Character

In the wake of the ugly brawl between the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons on November 19, 2004, high school basketball players from Martinsville and Mooresville volunteered to read radio PSA's on the Six Pillars of Character. They taped the messages November 30.

WCBK in Martinsville aired the PSA's all week, and students also read the messages at basketball games, according to the Mooresville-Decatur Times.

Ryanne Gluff spoke on citizenship and said, “Things like this can make us or break us. The NBA is out of control right now, so good character needs to start with us. We can pass it on to our younger siblings and family members.”

Jennifer Bunton felt fairness is essential to sport: “Everyone on the team needs an equal chance to show their talents. School teachers, principals and coaches need to be fair, nice and considerate of students’ feelings.”

Tim Dearlove said caring people were grateful, compassionate, and forgiving, and helped people in need. In short, they showed they cared rather than just saying so. Team members had to think of others’ rights as well as their own during a game, he said, and he emphasized that athletes should maintain a good attitude whether or not they agreed with referee or coach. He noted that all the Pillars were equally important.

Andy Stroud focused on citizenship and said good citizens got involved in their community, obeyed the law, voted, helped safeguard the environment, respected authority and were good neighbors.

Alison Lewis spoke about caring and added, “You should work your hardest at whatever you do and never forget about the Six Pillars of Character.”
