Morgan County, IN: Volunteers Share Wooden's Wisdom

CC! volunteers announced a massive drive to bring John Wooden's books to residents in August 2004. The revelation came at a luncheon where CHARACTER COUNTS! in Morgan County kicked off Phase II of the program (meant to take it beyond the pilot stage).

Morgan County knows Coach Wooden well. He had starred on the Martinsville High basketball squad en route to the Hall of Fame, and he recently sent residents a letter endorsing CC! and the Six Pillars.

Now the schools are working with CC! and the Morgan County Public Library to bring two books by the Coach and Steve Jamison to residents: Inch and Miles, for children, and My Personal Best, geared more toward older readers.

Library director David Ross said, “I read a lot of books, but it’s been awhile since I was excited by any of them. Wooden’s books give a new outlook on winning [and] self-worth, and encourage positive attitudes.” According to the Mooresville-Decatur Times, Mr. Ross hoped to distribute 50,000 books in the county. He said the books embody the CC! message, and he planned a program at the library on November 20 to discuss the books.
