WOCG-FM 90.1 in Huntsville conducted a CC! contest in the community. “We got a good response. A lot of people were actively participating,” says production director Brennan Wimbish. “We ran one-minute spots about the Pillar of the Day, suggesting how you could show it. Every morning at 7:30 in morning drive shift, we’d say, ‘These are the Six Pillars of Character. Listen for this special sound. Then call in, tell us the Pillar of the Day and ways to exemplify it.” What was the sound like? “I couldn’t even find a word to describe it,” Wimbish says. “It was like a noise you’d make at a birthdays, with a party favor.” Between 20 and 25 people won, mostly from the station’s core audience of women aged 32-54. “There were a few kids calling in, with help from mom and dad,” he says. “It was very nice. We gave away T-shirts, lots of CHARACTER COUNTS! paraphernalia.” Next year the station is thinking of orienting the contest toward ethical organizations. WOCG is a noncommercial educational Christian station, owned and operated by the historic black Oakwood College, and has broadcast inspirational soul music for the last 27 years.
